"With firm determination to give ourselves completely to God we will actively practice and promote an all embracing social justice."
SCC Constitution (Art.24)
In the spirit of our Foundress, Blessed Pauline von Mallinckrodt, we serve as instruments of justice and peace, working on behalf of all God’s people who are victims of injustice and violence today. The work of justice and peace is integral to who we are as SCCs and inherent in our charism and mission. We stand with and advocate for those who are voiceless in our society—the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed, the vulnerable and our suffering earth —to help restore human dignity and the rights of all of Creation. We are committed to listening to and acting on the “cry of the poor and the cry of the earth” through prayer, education and advocacy. The SCC Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation publishes a monthly Update (found below) to provide information on current social justice issues as well as suggested actions that relate to these issues. Use the link in the side bar to access Updates.
We all know how our foundress Pauline was keenly aware of the signs of the times in her day and responded with genuine concern for the marginalized and vulnerable. I often think about how she would respond to today's cry of the migrants who are being targeted and abandoned. I think she would agree with Pope Francis who wrote to the US Bishops this month in response to the immigration crisis stating in his letter: "I exhort all the faithful of the Catholic Church, and all men and women of good will, not to give into narratives that discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters. With charity and clarity we are all called to live in solidarity and fraternity, to build bridges that bring us ever closer together, to avoid walls of ignominy and to learn to give our lives as Jesus Christ gave his for the salvation of all." -Pope Francis, Letter to the Bishops of the United States of America. You can click on the link to read the short letter. It is a plea for solidarity and a call for active engagement in not abandoning the most vulnerable in society. In this Jubilee year of hope we are called to engage in hope filled efforts to respond with genuine concern as Pauline would have us do! Hope is an action word!
Let us continue to pray for Pope Francis and all those in need of our prayers. Blessings as we journey together in hope during the season of Lent,
Sr. Patrice JPIC Coordinator
