"With firm determination to give ourselves completely to God we will actively practice and promote an all embracing social justice."
SCC Constitution (Art.24)
In the spirit of our Foundress, Blessed Pauline von Mallinckrodt, we serve as instruments of justice and peace, working on behalf of all God’s people who are victims of injustice and violence today. The work of justice and peace is integral to who we are as SCCs and inherent in our charism and mission. We stand with and advocate for those who are voiceless in our society—the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed, the vulnerable and our suffering earth —to help restore human dignity and the rights of all of Creation. We are committed to listening to and acting on the “cry of the poor and the cry of the earth” through prayer, education and advocacy. The SCC Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation publishes a monthly Update (found below) to provide information on current social justice issues as well as suggested actions that relate to these issues. Use the link in the side bar to access Updates.
Dear SCC Family and Friends,
Happy December! Happy Advent! Recently I read this quote that resonated with me: “It’s encouraging to think of the coming of Jesus at Christmas as a ‘just shoot,’ a sprig of green piercing the frozen wilderness in the gloom of winter. As the baby in the manger entered this world in incredible vulnerability, so too does the shoot of God’s justice spring up delicately in the world and invite our joining in its nurturing and care." (Joan Neal) Doesn't Advent call us to work for the peace and justice that God dreams for our wounded world? What is ours to do now?
There are so many issues that call for justice so all people may thrive. In the DecemberUpdate there are some Action Alerts that you can take action on as we nurture the shoot of God's justice to protect our immigrant sisters and brothers. There are others that the Sisters of Mercy and other religious communities highlight that we can collaborate with in their efforts to nurture the shoot of God's justice in our world today. Our collective energy and care will make a big difference during this season of Advent as we prepare to celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace once again. Religious communities in the Chicago area have done a lot of advocacy for immigrants as related in the article from the Chicago Catholic. Sr. Rose Therese, the JPIC Coordinator for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Northfield, is mentioned in the article. Sister works with Sr. Joanne Ladwig and our Sisters in the west on peace and justice projects and she shared with us at our team meeting the initiatives they are working on that invite collaboration. Click here for the article.
Thank you to all who sent in donations for Mary's Hands. We also donated Blessing Bags made by Sr. Marie Luu's students in St. Lawrence's Faith Formation program to the Sheriff's Office Hope One Project. The Sisters here in the Motherhouse will be doing Blessing Bags next week for the homeless also. Sr. Maria Dolores crocheted a whopping 175 hats for the homeless to mark our 175th anniversary this year! Sr. Mary Mark's sisters sewed 100 fabric bags for the homeless. Goodness overflows! Thank you for all you are doing here in the Motherhouse and in your schools and parishes during this season of Advent to nurture the shoot of God's justice and peace!
Advent blessings,
Sr. Patrice
JPIC Coordinator
