Sister Roberta, nee Lillian Theresa Marie Patterson, entered eternal life on June 18, 2021 at the Motherhouse in Mendham, NJ. Sister was 92 years of age. Born on October 7, 1928, in Philadelphia, PA, Sister Roberta was the daughter of Robert and Sarah (McNichol) Patterson.
Sister attended St. Aloysius Elementary School in South Philadelphia, Immaculata High School in Mendham, NJ, and received her B.S. in Education from Marywood University in Scranton, PA.
At the age of 16, Sister answered God’s call to religious life and entered the Sisters of Christian Charity. She was invested on August 21, 1945, pronounced her First Vows on August 21, 1947, and Final Vows on August 20, 1953.
After pronouncing her First Holy Vows, Sister began her dedicated and enthusiastic life in the field of elementary education. That enthusiasm was very evident in her 55 years of teaching and administration. She was an excellent English teacher. Sr. Roberta’s students could recite every part of speech, every preposition, and diagram any sentence. Sister taught in many schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida. By 2006, Sister Roberta retired from teaching, but not from life. For ten more years Sister worked with the elderly in Ocean City, NJ. In 2016, Sister retired to Danville, PA, and in 2018, joined the Sisters in their move to the Motherhouse in Mendham, NJ.
Sister Roberta was predeceased by her two sisters, Joan and Mae, both of Philadelphia, PA. Sister is survived by her sister, Patricia (Derer), her brother Robert of Jacksonville, FL, and her brother Francis of Philadelphia, PA, and many nieces and nephews, great nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be in the Motherhouse Chapel of Mary Immaculate on Tuesday, June 22 beginning at 2:00 PM followed by Vespers at 7:00 PM. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Motherhouse Chapel on Wednesday, June 23, at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds.
