Sister Mary Ann Poppler, who celebrated her 70th year as a professed woman religious this year, died August 18 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, IL. She was 87 years old.
Mary Ann Poppler was born on February 10, 1934 in Waconia, Minnesota. She became a novice with the Sisters of Christian Charity on August 21, 1951, receiving the name Sister Francine. She made her perpetual profession on August 20, 1959.
Between 1953 and 1971, Sister Francine taught in Illinois, Missouri, Michigan and Minnesota. Returning to her baptismal name, Sister Mary Ann taught in Iowa, Illinois Minnesota, Missouri and Michigan from 1971 to 1991.
Sister Mary Ann studied Clinical Pastoral Education and enrolled in the Master of Arts Program at the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University, Chicago and became a pastoral minister at Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital in Illinois, followed by Clinical Pastoral Education at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pennsylvania.
Sister Mary Ann moved to Sacred Heart Convent in 2003, where she continued pastoral ministry to the Sisters there and was known for her beautiful handiwork, which won several awards.
A funeral Mass was held for Sister Mary Ann on Thursday, August 26 in the chapel at Sacred Heart Convent.
