Sister Mary Agnes Shurer, Sister of Christian Charity, entered eternal life on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Motherhouse in Mendham, New Jersey. Sr. Mary Agnes was 85 years old. Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on September 9,1934 Sister Mary Agnes was the daughter of Agnes (Lorson) and Hiram Raymond Shurer.
Sister entered the community of the Sisters of Christian Charity on September 7,1952. She made her First Vows on August 21, 1955 and her Final Profession of Vows on August 20,1961.
Over the years Sister labored in the field of Catholic school education as an elementary and secondary teacher and principal in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
She served as community formation directress from 1969-1980 and participated in several formation workshops in Germany and Rome. In her later years she worked as school secretary at Cathedral School in Metuchen and then as an assistant to the Provincial Treasurer. In 2015 she joined the retirement community at Holy Family Convent in Danville and in 2018 began her residence at the new Motherhouse in Mendham, New Jersey.
Sister Mary Agnes is survived by her sisters, Sr. Maria Assumpta, SCC and Dorothy Beckman, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, sister-in-law, Barbara Shurer, Williamsport, Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews. Sister is pre-deceased by her brothers, Joseph, Father Ralph, and Clarence.
Private evening prayer with the Motherhouse community will be prayed for Sister Mary Agnes with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendham. A memorial Mass for Sister will be celebrated at a later date.
